This is my daughter. This kid brings her lunch to school everyday. And every morning I get up early to prepare breakfast for her.
After reading an article on nytimes.com about School Districts Rediscover The Value of From-Scratch Meals, it inspires me of talking about how poorly our kids are fed everyday at school. “Sickening pizza, chicken sandwiches and nachos” (taken from an article in http://www.prairie.org), poor nutrition keeps kids away from having the energy and concentration for learning. Most kids nowadays cannot focus well and they look spacey. I also have kid clients who are suffering from diabetes, obesity, digestive disorders, autism, ADD, ADHD etc.. Diet affects your kids tremendously! Your kids deserve way better than that. And why trade their health for your own convenience? I am sorry. I know this is a brutally straightforward thing to say to parents. Everybody is busy. Nobody is special in this scenario. Where there is a will, there is a way. I often read cookbooks so I could come up with yummy, easy-to-make lunch for Abby. I also use a crock pot. Put in all the ingredients in the pot and cook overnight, you have a meal the next morning! Go online for free crock pot recipes. I threw out my microwave long time ago. Now I have invested in a turbo oven. I am still improving everyday. Abby understands the importance of healthy eating. She loves trick or treating. But she doesn’t eat the candy. Maybe 1 or 2 out of the whole bucket. She understands the art of moderation. She sometimes goes to her friends’ birthday parties and she avoids harmful food there. Maybe once in a while she would have a few bites of a cupcake and it would be too sweet for her. There is a book called Nourishing Traditions. If you are interested in finding out the real deal of nutrition, you can look into this book. It is also a cookbook. Highly recommended.
